A little info for those of you who come from countries without conscription and thus might not be familiar with the way it works:
In many countries around the world young men (and in rare cases also women) between 18 and ~22 have to do a compulsory military service. Around the time when Tarrin was 18, men in France could choose between joining the military for 10 months or becoming a conscientious objector. If they chose to be a conscientious objector, they had to perform 20 months of an alternative service instead.
Tarrin doesn't want to do either of them, so he wants to be discharged. That's not easy though.  Usually one can only be discharged because of health issues or psychological problems.

Conscription was abolished in France in 2001.
