Le petit lémurien - Page 1

Back in 2006 when Tarrin and Laurel were still running Fleurblog together, they created this comic about a child version of Laurel and a bunch of aliens who dress up in lemur costumes and live in a zoo.
They only made 10 pages of that comic. I assume that's partially because Tarrin and Laurel split up and went to work on their own blogs. Also, Tarrin mentioned on his blog that they couldn't find a publisher who was interested in the story, so they dropped the project.
However, the first seven pages were published in Spirou magazine #3627.

So I'll post one page a day of that comic for the next 10 days. (You might have already seen the first three pages because I actually translated those back in June and posted them on 4chan.) After that I'll continue with the regular blog posts of Fabrice Tarrin's blog.

That comic was also printed on page 70-71 of Journal intime d'un Lémurien.

In case anyone cares: The movie Cyril's dad refers to is a 1972 French comedy called "Le Viager" ("The Annuity").

"And again, if at least one Youki who's more skilled with computers
than me could record that part for us (with some seconds before
and after the clip so we can see the reactions of the audience).
It's about Michael Leeb :)"

Yuko, Fred Neidhardt's wife, is from Japan, hence the accent.

and I lost this hideous shirt...
No reason to harp on it. :)"

29 September 2007 - Comic #152

"So Cyril the duck will be with me
(instead of Fred the dog who had a little accident).
Saturday and Sunday between 13:00 and 16:00.
If you want a little Lemur, I'll do it with pleasure!

I can't even watch our hoax on Ardisson's show this week
(Tonight on Canal+ starting 19:15)

Could a youki record it for the web?
Thanks a lot!"

Here's a video of the second hoax:

This is hoax is about Tarrin going around telling people that TV presenter Arthur has died and then asks them what they think about it. Of course, Arthur is not dead. (That's the joke.) In fact, you can even see Arthur in the studio at the end of the video at 1:52 facepalming because of the comments people made.

2007 Festiblog Interview

Anon asked, so here it is - my translation of the 2007 Festiblog interview:

Another "new guy" at this year's event. A lemur that is well-known in the blogosphere. An author that the girls find attractive and who is preparing to delight the fans of Spirou: Fabrice Tarrin.

An advice after reading the interview: It is better to come to the festival, if you want real answers. ;)

How did you start drawing?

In kindergarten without stopping.

Have you received training?

No.

Can you present your blog? How did you become a blogger?

It was thanks to Laurel who kept bugging me for months to create one with her. Since then it became really addictive. My blog is primarily about my autobiographical adventures (99% of it is true), my friends, my relationships and my work. The characters are represented by animals (I'm the Lemur).

What is your main goal when blogging?

To have a huge amount of visitors to flatter my ego.

Who are your readers nowadays?

Those of Laurel's blog.

How much time do you spend on your entries (per day / per week)?

1 hour per day on average. Sometimes more.

Do you draw the comics specifically for the blog or are they scans from a sketchbook or is it stuff that has already been published elsewhere?

Yes, I draw them for the blog specifically.

And how do you draw them?

With my left hand.

How much time do you spend reading other blogs?

Too much.

Which are your favorite blogs? (Name the links)

Those of Laurel, Kek, Neidhardt and Chicou-Chicou.

Have you met people through blogs?

Yes, a lot.

Do you know a particular anecdote that's blog-related?

No, several.

Are you sensitive to comments?

Yes.

What do you like about blogs and blogging?

The stories.

What do you like least about blogs?

The lack of humor.

Do you feel we're moving towards a world of webcomics?

Yes.

Can you imagine that readers will ever pay to read comics online?

Yes.

And outside of blogs where can we see your work?

In comic magazines, or in bookstores.

Can you talk about your books?

They are very good, buy them all!

What do you expect from the festival?

To meet my fans and my colleagues.

A final message for your fans?

I love you all. Especially you!

If you click on the upper pic, you'll be redirected to the FestiBlog 2007 website. Scroll down to 28 August for a short interview with Tarrin. If anyone is really interested in it, leave a comment and I'll translate it.

FestiBlog is an annual festival held in France where comic blog authors meet IRL.

You can also find this comic in Charlotte Gainsbourg mon amour page 109-111.

As the comic implies the material they filmed for that hidden camera show was never shown on TV because even though the production team thought the idea was funny, they later decided that it was too much of a touchy subject to show it on TV.

Some scenes have been uploaded though:

12 September 2007 - Comic #145

Tarrin posted this image because it was the first birthday of the Lemur character. Click on the image to see the very first Lemur comic. It was published at Fleurblog on 12 September 2006. I'll translate those 11 comics published on Fleurblog too once I've caught up with the comics on Tarrin's blog.

So that was the plan for the hidden camera show Salut les Terriens.

This comic was printed in Charlotte Gainsbourg mon amour on pages 105 and 107. On page 106 is a scan of the "le nouveau Detective" magazine Tarrin mentions:

In the comments of this entry, Tarrin said that Trondheim really does not like his Spirou/Violine very much. However, to motivate him to finish his Spirou book, Trondheim forbade Tarrin to draw the Lemur in his presence, even though he likes it a 100 times better than his other works.
Here is the music video of the 1998 song "Je crois que ça va pas être possible" by Zebda mentioned in the last panel:

Image hosting problems

Just a little sidenote: Since Blogspot scales down pictures whose height exceeds 1600px, I had uploaded some of the pics of this blog onto freeimagehosting.net. However, that site seems to be down since this morning. I don't know if it's just temporary or for good, so I just went through all the old blog entries and re-uploaded every pic that's higher than 1600px onto imageshack.us. I hope they are more reliable than freeimagehosting.net...

"PS: That's it, I've finished my book. :)"

Some background info for my trusty readers:

Émile Bravo tries to merge comics and children books. He became well-known for books like Les epatantes aventures de Jules ("Jules' splendid adventures") and Boucle d'or et les sept ours nains ("The Golden Ring and the Seven Dwarf Bears"). One year after Tarrin, in 2008 he released a Spirou one-shot album: Spirou, le journal d'un ingénu ("Spirou, An Ingenuous [Boy]'s Diary").

Yann started off as a comic Artist but soon decided to become a comic scriptwriter instead. Among other things, he worked on Sambre together with Yslaire and on The Adventures of Freddy Lombard together with Yves Chaland.

Poildur
A teenage ruffian from Brussels who carries a pet rat on his shoulder. He was introduced in Spirou sur le ring ("Spirou in the Ring") in 1948. He is also mentioned in Yann's Aux sources du Z ("The Origins of the Z", 2008) and plays a part in his one-shot special Le groom vert-de-gris (2009).

Zorglub
There's a pretty good article about this evil arch-villain in the English Wikipedia.

Turbotraction
The Turbotraction is a car that was introduced to the Spirou universe by Franquin in 1954. The turbine-powered vehicle was offered to Spirou and Fantasio by fictional car manufacturer Turbot. It was inspired by the SOCEMA-Grégoire.

And with this ends the long series of "Le déménagement" comics about Tarrin's move to Montpellier.

This comic was also printed on page 25-26 of Journal intime d'un Lémurien.
